In summer Thredbo’s long long ski runs are transformed into biking heaven accessed by the chair lift every day. Thredbo has long been the premier bicycle riding location for those wishing to experience the thrill of downhill mountain biking in a carefully managed programme.
The initiation is useful to ensure a high level of safety for all participants on the downhill course by completing a circuit with one of our qualified instructors. They will teach you how to use the chairlift, where the trails start from, and technical skills for riding downhill safely. Afterwards you can upgrade to further group instruction, a private lesson or just free-ride by yourself.
Once you have completed the initiation you can have unlimited rides during the two sessions every day, when you purchase a day ticket valid between 9am and 4.30pm. You can also enrol in further improvement clinics if you so desire; these are offered for all levels up to race level.
The new Flow trail is suitable to all competent riders, and can be ridden using normal X-country bikes. The Flow Trail links to the Thredbo Valley trail which goes to lake Crackenback; by summer end 2019 will travel through to the Kosciusko Road and join the trail back to Jindabyne.
The initiation is compulsory as detailed above for all riders who have not ridden downhill before. It’s for safety reasons as the Thredbo Cannonball Run is thrilling and challenging. Full Face helmets are a mandatory requirement for all riders using the chairlift. Riders who have ridden the Thredbo Downhill before do not need to complete the initiation again. South East Mountain Biking will have your details on their database if you have ridden before.
Once you have completed an initiation session, a day ticket gives you unlimited rides up the chairlift during the morning and afternoon sessions. So if you have all of your own gear and you have ridden the Thredbo downhill track before then this is the ticket for you.

This is a really exciting thing to think about hiring – imagine impressing your friends with your own video of you riding the Cannonball and other Thredbo trails. Thredbo Mountain Bikes now hire helmets with helmet cams.
Hire a camera for the day, shoot your runs, shoot your friends runs, or even get our guides to shoot your runs. Take home a memory stick at the end of the day, upload it & your live.
If you are travelling with friends then the right choice is to organise your friends for a group clinic (up to 12 riders) to improve your skills. Thredbo Mountain Biking places a strong emphasis on improving all levels of riding ability. Lessons are available for downhill, cross country and mountain cross. We can cater for total beginners to experienced racers and everyone in between.
Thredbo also offers great cross country riding with trails available in the village and nearby in Jindabyne and Lake Crackenback. Guided tours for all levels can also be arranged. The guides will take you to scenic points of interest, teach you riding techniques and help make your biking adventure much more than just a great ride. All bike hire includes helmet & basic riding instruction.
There are a couple of great loops in the village using the Pipeline and Bridle Loops, through the village, up through Crackenback Ridge and back around the golf course. The more difficult loop additionally takes in the Friday Flat fire trail, the top of the bobsled and the lower part of the downhill trail at the Tower Ten switchbacks, plus the Meadows single track and back around the golf course.
The Cascade Hut Trail is a 22km return trip. You take your car and bike or ride up the Alpine Way form Thredbo to Dead Horse Gap. From there you leave the Alpine Way at the Bob's Ridge Walking track & travel through the Pilot Wilderness. It is a moderately difficult ride up to Bobs Ridge where you can see the Victorian Alps, then a fun descent to Cascade Hut. Keep an eye out for the brumbies.
For a challenging long day or overnight ride, continue on past Tin Mine Hut to the Nine Mile Trail. This very steep section will take you to the Pinch campgroud on the Barry Way. As this ride is not a loop you will need to organise a car at the other end.
The Lake Crackenback Resort is located 15kms from Thredbo towards Jindabyne. You can ride the Thredbo Valley Trail after you have completed the new Flow Trail - they are linked for a great bike excursion. Over 30 km of trails have been constructed around the resort and between The Diggings campng ground in the National Park and along the Thredbo River. The local riders say it is some of the finest mountain biking country in Australia. We are looking forward to the completion of the trail down the Thredbo River as well.
Jindabyne has developed rapidly into cross country mountain biking heaven. The new track from the Jindabyne Dam Wall to Tyrolean Village is an absolute ‘pearler’ with amazing views and an International Mountain Biking Association designer track with easy grades and thrilling speed sections. Work has finished on the connection between the dam wall and Jindabyne town track, an easy concrete and gravel path wending its way along the shore of Lake Jindabyne in front of town. And the latest addition is a track from the boat launch ramp just past the Shell Snowline all the way to Hatchery Bay, offering a delightful relatively level single track for all abilities and ages!
